COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Bachelor of Arts with Honours is a specialised one year course that enables you to deepen your knowledge and research skills in a particular field of Humanities, Social Sciences, Creative Arts and Media, or the study of Geography and Environment.

You will apply advanced theory and research methods to social and cultural issues of local and global significance to become an independent, critical and reflective thinker. Working closely with an academic supervisor, you will develop valuable skills in designing and managing independent projects in your area of interest and, by the end of the course, you will be equipped with advanced research, analytical and communication skills that will prepare you for entry to higher degree research, such as a Master of Arts or PhD, or other professional careers.

Course objectives

The Bachelor of Arts with Honours course allows candidates to pursue in-depth study in the program or programs of their choice and at the same time to demonstrate a level of excellence that will allow them to pursue higher degree including research, studies.

Learning Outcomes

By studying a Bachelor of Arts with Honours you will learn to:

  • Articulate underlying principles, concepts and approaches to research in one or more disciplines.
  • Critically evaluate and reflect on a range of social, cultural, political, ethical and environmental issues in local, cross-cultural and global contexts, through synthesis of different perspectives.
  • Communicate disciplinary perspectives and knowledge effectively and ethically, to specialist and non-specialist audiences using written, oral and visual means.
  • Plan and implement a major independent project in the context of scholarship and/or professional practice.
  • Employ self-management, creativity, flexibility, initiative, and resilience in completing course study, showing readiness for further study or work.

Career outcomes

In Australia and around the world, employers are increasingly seeing graduates who can speak and write clearly; who are computer literate and understand how to use technology; who know about other countries, cultures and societies; who can solve problems creatively; and who have developed that flexibility of thought which technical and vocational training rarely encourages.

Graduates with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree find jobs in, for example: advertising, journalism, radio and television; arts administration, heritage and curatorial positions; diplomacy, interpreting and tourism; management, marketing and administration; politics, the public service, the police force and the armed forces; research and publishing; social welfare and community work, or go onto academic careers.

REQUIREMENTS

Completion a Bachelor of Arts, or another approved Bachelor degree, in this University or another approved tertiary institution with a weighted average of 70% or higher, in the 200 and 300 level units forming a major in the proposed Honours discipline of study.

Most of our undergraduate programs have the following English language requirements.

IELTS (Academic) – 6.0 (no individual band less than 5.5)

TOEFL (iBT) 72 (no skill below: Reading 10; Listening 9; Speaking 16; Writing 19)

PTE Academic 50 with no score lower than 42

UTAS Access-English Level 6 – 60% (no individual score less than 55%)

Cambridge CAE (Certificate of Advanced English) – B Grade

Cambridge CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) – C Grade

Cambridge BEC (Business English Certificate) Higher – C Grade

The University of Tasmania was officially founded on 1st January 1890 and is located at Sandy Bay, Tasmania. In addition to the main campus at Sandy Bay, it also operates out of the Newnham Campus and the Cradle Coast Campus. The most popular courses offered are the environmental studies that include wilderness management, marine sciences and indigenous studies in Tasmanian literature. Other unconventional courses include agriculture development, studies on the community and population and ocean study programs. The university also comprises of a Music Conservatorium, Art school and a School of Clinical studies.
