COURSE DESCRIPTION

This master’s degree is for qualified Physiotherapists who want to gain advanced clinical skills and knowledge in the prominent field of sports physiotherapy.

This degree accelerates your skills with an advanced qualification in sports physiotherapy practice, enhancing your sports specific knowledge, reasoning and clinical skills for future work with sporting organisations and in private practice.

Many of our sports physiotherapy graduates work at amateur, elite, national and international levels in a wide range of sports including Australian Rules Football, soccer, tennis, netball, gymnastics, swimming, water polo, dance, circus or acrobatics, skiing, Paralympic sports, softball, baseball, basketball and cricket.

What you’ll learn

Sports Physiotherapists assess and treat sports and other injuries in field and outpatient settings. They need quick decision-making skills to triage injuries during events; to perform pre-season screening; and develop injury prevention strategies for teams and individuals. When travelling with sports teams, the Sports Physiotherapist needs management, organisation and leadership skills.

Through a variety of theoretical classes and practical experiences, you’ll develop advanced skills and knowledge in sports physiotherapy. You’ll study topics such as:

allied health evidence translation
pain theory and science, assessment and management
advanced musculoskeletal examination and management
exercise and conditioning
advanced sports theory and management.

Clinical practice is a significant component of this degree. You’ll be able to apply your new knowledge to clinical practice, under the supervision of postgraduate qualified physiotherapists.

Sports physiotherapists work to help all types of bodies – from recreational to elite athletes, to perform at their best.

UniSA’s master’s degree combined with membership of the APA means accredited sports physiotherapists can typically work in private practice in primary health care, in consultancy practices, and with sporting teams or organisations. These environments vary across:

  • private practice
  • clinics
  • sport and exercise services
  • rehabilitation centres
  • home and community services
  • hospitals.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants are required to have:

  • completed a Bachelor degree level, or equivalent professional entry level qualification, from a recognised higher education institution, in Physiotherapy; AND
  • a minimum 10 months full-time, or equivalent, physiotherapy practice in a relevant field following completion of the professional entry level qualification; AND
  • met the requirements for eligibility for registration as a physiotherapist or limited registration under supervision with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Students must apply for limited registration after acceptance into the program.

English Language Requirements:

IELTS score of 7.0; TOEFL iBT score of 94 with no band less than 22; TOEFL paper-based test (PBT) score of 600 with TWE of 5.0; Cambridge CAE/CPE score of 186; Pearson’s test of English (Academic) (PTE) score of 65 with no communicative score less than 65; CELUSA score of AE6.
