The Bachelor of Social Work with Honours encompasses 30 credit points of research dissertation.
As well as the opportunity for career and skill advancement, the Honours program creates a pathway for Social Work students to move into research and higher degree studies via the Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy programs.
WORK-INTEGRATED LEARNING
Work-integrated learning activities integrate theoretical learning with its application in the workplace. The inclusion of work-integrated learning activities in this degree program demonstrates Griffith’s commitment to preparing its graduates for success in their working life.
In this program you will spend time in the work/professional environment undertaking placements at various locations. Placements may be outside of the Brisbane metropolitan/Gold Coast area including northern New South Wales and (by negotiation) interstate or overseas.
In accordance with Appendix 3, Section 1 of the Australian Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards (ASWEAS) {DQ}Field education placements will be undertaken at minimum over two years of the professional social work program of study{DQ}.
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE REQUIREMENTS
There are placements associated with this program and before undertaking professional experience placements, all students in this program are required to have completed the following by the end of their first trimester of study: Vaccinations and Health Tests; Licenses and Certificates; Online Training; Health Placement Requirements.
Students should refer to the checklist of professional practice requirements for their Health discipline on the Fit for Professional Practice website for full details of the requirements regarding professional placement to ensure that they meet eligibility for placement.

The program ensures that graduates are ethical and innovative thinkers, effective communicators, problem solvers, change facilitators and leaders.
This program prepares you for a wide range of social work roles including working with individuals, groups and families; community work; advocacy, research, planning and policy development; and management and administration. You could also work in child protection, youth work, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander services, child and family welfare, youth and adult offending, hospital and community health settings, employment and income support and aged care.
Other career options include community development, family support, foster care services, disability services, policy and research, services for women, multicultural services and many other social welfare organisations.
REQUIREMENTS
Students who have completed Years 1 and 2 of the Bachelor of Social Work (1372) or Bachelor of Social Work (1282) or equivalent program are eligible to apply for admission to this program. Students will undertake the 30 credit point dissertation in Years 3 and 4 as determined by the Program Director and subject to the following criteria:
- completion of Years 1 and 2 of the Bachelor of Social Work (1372) or Bachelor of Social Work (1282) or equivalent program;
- achievement of a GPA of at least 5.5 for the second year core courses in the Bachelor of Social Work (1372) or Bachelor of Social Work (1282); and
- achievement of a grade of at least 5.0 in 2002HSV Human Services Research or equivalent research course.
The Program Director will take the following into consideration when assessing applications for admission:
- the suitability of the proposed dissertation topic; and
- the resources available to support the candidature including availability of appropriate supervision.
English language requirements apply to International applicants and other applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English. The minimum English language requirements for such applicants for entry to this program are as follows:
- A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on IELTS (Academic) with no sub-score of less than 6.0 and
- English test results must be no more than two years old.
