COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) is a two-year postgraduate course, available both full time and part time.

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) provides foundational understandings of the Secondary school contexts (Year 7 – Year 12), with a particular emphasis on teaching from a Christian perspective. The course equips students with effective teaching and learning strategies to apply their knowledge, expertise and experience to engage the adolescent learner. Students are equipped to integrate Christian worldview perspectives into their teaching.

The maximum time allowed for the completion of the Master of Teaching (Secondary) is eight years. Extensions beyond this time may be approved where extenuating circumstances exist.

Students who successfully complete 8 units of the Master of Teaching (Secondary) but are unable to complete the remainder of the course may exit with the Graduate Diploma in Teaching Studies. The Graduate Diploma in Teaching Studies does not satisfy the requirements for registration with the Queensland College of Teachers.

School-based placements

School-based teaching placements create authentic learning experiences and are integral to shaping teaching practice.

The Professional Experience Program (PEP) consists of 85 days of supervised practicum undertaken in a range of schools. Placements are available in the Christian, state and Independent schooling sectors in both urban and regional settings. Students are required to hold a valid Blue Card in order to engage in PEP.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) consist of 3 strands: Christian Education, Education Studies, and Curriculum, Learning and Teaching.

In planning their courses, students must consult the Education Courses Guide for information regarding course rules and requirements, including unit prerequisite requirements.

REQUIREMENTS

Recent secondary education

Applicants with recent secondary education are not eligible for admission to this course.

Vocational education and training (VET) study

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study are not eligible for admission to this course.

Higher education study

Applicants with a Bachelor degree (other than Education) with a GPA of at least 4.0 and a major study in at least one teaching area in the secondary school curriculum are eligible for admission to this course. Additional admission criteria apply.

Work and life experience

Whilst some courses recognise work and life experience as alternative prior learning to an ATAR or other perquisites, unfortunately for postgraduate courses like this one, that is not possible, as the undergraduate degree entry is also used to define the teaching area.

English language proficiency requirements apply to all domestic and overseas applicants for whom English is not their first language. The minimum English language proficiency requirements for entry to the Master of Teaching (Secondary) are as follows:

IELTS (Academic) 7.5 (at least 8.0 for Listening and Speaking; at least 7.0 for reading and Writing)

ISLPR 4 (in each of the areas of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing)
