COURSE DESCRIPTION

This qualification reflects the role of workers who have lived experience of mental illness as either a consumer or carer and who work in mental health services in roles that support consumer peers or carer peers. Successful graduates will acquire the skills of therapeutic communication and coaching, conducting assessments, facilitating peer support groups, providing advocacy and support, assisting with crisis intervention, and implementing recovery-focused strategies, recovery and trauma-informed care, and working with impacted families, as well as knowledge of current legal and ethical considerations affecting the operation of mental health services, including the NDIS.

Upon completing this program, graduates may gain employment within the mental health sector in government, public, private or community managed services as a peer worker or carer peer. They will be qualified to provide support and hope to others with mental health issues.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 80 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

Successful completion of this qualification will enable you to progress to other courses, such as Certificate Iv in Mental Health and Diploma of Mental Health

REQUIREMENTS

The minimum age for eligible applicants is 18 years. Applicants must have successfully completed the equivalent of Year 11 according to the Australian Qualifications Framework.

Proficiency in English is required to meet Industry standards.

Although LLN test is not an entry requirement, students may be asked to undertake the same so that appropriate academic support can be ensured throughout the course of study.

Must have the ability to undertake a work placement at a community mental health, aged care, home and community care, disability care or community service organisation

A Pre-training Review is conducted with the Learner to identify Language, Literacy and Numeracy levels, any disability that may affect your learning and to ascertain support that may be required during your study period.
