COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a two year full-time (or part-time equivalent) research degree in a field covered by the University, including theology and philosophy, nursing and midwifery, education, business or arts and sciences. It is assessed on the basis of a written thesis which is submitted at the conclusion of the degree.

International applicants

A candidate for the degree of Master of Philosophy must comply with the Research and Professional Doctorate Degree Regulations.

An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Philosophy must have completed one of the following:

An appropriate undergraduate degree with Honours at a minimum level of Second Class Division A (Distinction average); or

Postgraduate research training (eg coursework completed to distinction level or higher or a master-by-coursework degree); or

Demonstrated research experience with evidence of capacity to undertake independent research work (eg an authored publication).

Meeting the eligibility requirements for admission is not in itself a guarantee of admission. The candidate’s potential to undertake research, the quality and feasibility of the research proposal, the availability of appropriate supervision and the referee’s reports will all be taken into consideration.

Inherent requirement

The eligibility criteria for admission into the Master of Philosophy are stipulated in the Higher Degree Research Regulations, Eligibility For Admission To A Research Higher Degree.

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – 6.5 overall score (including individual scores of 6.0 for all tests)
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) – 58
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language – Academic (TOEFL) – 79 (Writing – 24, Reading – 19, Speaking – 20, Listening – 20)
  • ACU English Language Test – B
  • Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) – 176
