COURSE DESCRIPTION

This qualification reflects the role of workers in a range of community settings and clients’ homes, who provide training and support in a manner that empowers people with disabilities to achieve greater levels of independence, self-reliance, community participation and wellbeing. Workers promote a person-centred approach, work without direct supervision and may be required to supervise and/or coordinate a small team.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.

Course Outcome:

On successful completion of this course, students would receive Certificate IV in Disability qualification. This course will prepare you to start, or advance a rewarding career in the disability, aged care, health, or community care sector. Graduates would have gained skills and knowledge to fulfil the functions of senior, disability support worker and care facilitator, plus advanced skills for use in more senior roles. These include how to recognize healthy bodies, and work safely and meet the individual support needs of your clients. Additionally, you will learn to facilitate the empowerment, community participation, and ongoing skills development of people with disabilities. Beyond that, and more broadly you will gain knowledge of the health and community care sectors, and how to coordinate services for individuals with disabilities and their families.

Course Credit

Students may apply for recognition of existing qualifications or skills, knowledge and experience (credit transfer or recognition of prior learning). The granting of course credit may affect course fees, as well as the duration of the course.

Academic Pathways

Students who complete this course may wish to continue their education into the CHC43015 – Certificate IV in Ageing Support, CHC52015 Diploma of Community Services, BSB42015 – Certificate IV in Leadership and Management, etc.

Employment Pathways

Potential employment options are as personal care assistant, disability support worker, care workers, Disability Support Job Coordinator, Social Educator, Lifestyle Support Officer, etc

REQUIREMENTS

Be at least 18 years of age and have completed the equivalent of Year 12.

Participate in a course entry interview to determine suitability for the course and student needs.

Have an IELTS* score of 6.0 (test results must be no more than 2 years old) English language competence can also be demonstrated through documented evidence of any of the following:

  • Educated for 5 years in an English-speaking country; or
  • Successful completion of an English Placement Test
