This qualification provides a vocational outcome in parks and gardens. The parks and gardens industry expects this qualification to be achieved to meet job outcomes at this level.
A parks and gardens tradesperson – also known as a horticulturist – is a multi-skilled worker in the parks and gardens industry.
Work undertaken as a horticulturist could include:
- installing and maintaining plant displays
- cultivating turf
- installing irrigation and drainage
- controlling weeds, pests and diseases
- performing operational maintenance of machinery
- providing information on plants, products and
- treatments
- maintaining natural and re-vegetated areas
There is a number of ways to get work as a horticulturist. Most of them have either progressed from working as parks and gardens trades assistants or have completed a Level 3 Traineeship in Parks and Gardens which involves formal learning while working on-the-job. The national qualification for a horticulturist is the Certificate III in Horticulture (Parks and Gardens).
Priority skills areas for working as a horticulturist include worksite supervision, installing plant displays, cultivating turf, irrigation and drainage installation, machinery maintenance and controlling pests and diseases

- AHCPGD310 Implement a landscape maintenance program
- AHCMOM304 Operate machinery and equipment
- AHCIRG346 Operate pressurised irrigation systems
- AHCPGD309 Perform specialist amenity pruning
- AHCWHS301 Contribute to work health and safety processes
- AHCCHM304 Transport and store chemicals
- AHCCHM307 Prepare and apply chemicals to control pest, weeds and diseases
- AHCPGD307 Implement a plant establishment program
REQUIREMENTS
Age: 16 plus
English Proficiency Requirements: All candidates must complete a Language Literacy & Numeracy Assessment, assessed by the Language Studies Department.
Academic Requirement: Completion of Certificate II in Horticulture or related field or equivalent to Australian Year 10 general schooling or 2 years’ work experience in horticultural related field or interested in commencing a career in horticulture.
