COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Diploma of Liberal Arts: Foundations of Wisdom is a one-year course, and is available on both a full time and part time basis.
The Diploma of Liberal Arts: Foundations of Wisdom is comprised of units from the first and second years of the associated Bachelor course. The units include subjects from each of the four main disciplines of theology, philosophy, literature and history. These subjects train students to write, think and speak well, and to appreciate various orders of God’s creation. These units are supplemented with two Christian worldview units, including an introductory unit focusing on the relationship between Christian thought and the liberal arts.
Students who complete the Diploma course are able to articulate into the second year of the Bachelor of Arts in the Liberal Arts with full credit.
A multidisciplinary liberal arts education provides flexibility in the job market. By cultivating transferable skills—like critical thinking, effective communication, managing complexity, creative problem-solving, synthesising data into arguments—the liberal arts equip students to pursue a broad range of careers. Some of the most common are teaching, journalism, law, public policy, business, history, international relations, marketing, ministry, philosophy, social science, and academia.
Whereas a specialised undergraduate degree trains people for their first job, a liberal arts degree enables them to move into a second, third, or fourth job more easily.
Employers also recognise the importance of hiring workers with sound reasoning, analytical and communication skills. Global leaders like Appleâ„¢ and Googleâ„¢ have been intentional about hiring liberal arts graduates.
A liberal arts diploma at the Millis Institute forms not a tool for any single career but a key to unlocking many.
