COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will allow you to develop specialty knowledge and skills to enhance your career goals whilst addressing a growing demand in our communities for care of people with mental health challenges.
The course has a focus on evidence-based practice and leadership and management and will prepare you to support staff in the clinical setting using strategies such as coaching and mentoring as these are core skills required by nurse leaders and researchers. A significant research project is also a core unit of your study.
Course learning outcomes
Critically reflect on a complex body of mental health nursing knowledge, research principles and methods to demonstrate mastery of mental health nursing.
Apply critical thinking skills to investigate, evaluate and synthesise complex ideas, concepts and theories in authentic clinical situations.
Apply communication and collaboration skills to analyse and design innovative contributions to professional nursing practice.
Use high level self-management skills to plan an evidence based practice project.
Career Opportunities
The 2021 National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing estimated that more than two in five Australians aged 16-85 years will have experienced a mental illness in their lives. In recognition of the increased prevalence of mental illness, the WA Government has increased expenditure for mental health services to expand the workforce and increase the number of hospital and community beds across the state. This means employment in a range of settings, such as mental health units and hospital emergency departments, community mental health centres, case management and outreach centres, private counselling or psychiatry practices, schools and government agencies, including rehab programs, and correctional facilities.

REQUIREMENTS
Academic admission requirements (Band 8) may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:
Bachelor degree in a cognate discipline; or
Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience.
English competency requirements:
IELTS Academic: An overall band minimum score of 6.5, with no individual band less than 6.0.) (Results are typically valid for 2 years and online tests are not acceptable.)
TOEFL iBT: TOEFL iBT: 84 (with no score below 17)
TOEFL Paper-Based Test (PBT): Minimum score of 573, including Test of Written English of 5.0 or better. (Results are typically valid for only 2 years)
Pearson Test of English (PTE): PTE Academic 58, with no score less than 50 for postgraduate standard entry courses. (Results are typically valid for only 2 years)
