COURSE DESCRIPTION

This double degree program enables school leavers without an undergraduate degree to pursue a career in medicine. The program provides a high standard of academic, clinical and professional medical training to equip graduates with the skills necessary to take up positions as hospital interns and thereby qualify for medical registration in Australia.

What you will study

First year

A typical first year may include:

  • core topics, practicals and workshops in the evolution of biological diversity, the molecular basis of life, legal and ethical aspects of health care, and human physiology and structure
  • topics, workshops and practicals in either chemical structure and bonding, and modern chemistry, or general chemistry, and chemistry for the life sciences
  • topics, workshops and practicals towards either your health sciences or medical science focus.

Second year

A typical second year may include:

  • core topics, practicals and workshops in biochemistry, molecular biology, communication for improved patient care, and human physiology
  • topics, workshops and practicals towards either your health sciences or medical science focus
  • a selection of electives in health or medical science, including nutrition and dietetics, paramedic science, immunology and microbiology, biotechnology, or disability studies, depending on your focus.

Third to sixth years

Typical third to sixth years may include:

  • themes in the interaction between doctor and patient including practicals and clinical placements
  • themes in knowledge of health and illness including practicals
  • themes in health professions and society, covering socially responsible health practice, clinical research foundations, and advanced studies
  • a theme introducing you to clinical practice, including practicals and a clinical placement
  • clinical performance topics including clinical and industry placements
  • option topics in research or coursework
  • a professional induction to clinical practice.

Your career

To qualify for registration with the Medical Board of Australia, on graduation you will need to complete a year as a hospital intern. Internship allocations in South Australia are managed by South Australian Medical Education and Training.

In addition to pursuing further training in a wide range of medical specialities, graduates may work in research, public health or community aid around the world, or in health administration.

Potential occupations include:

  • medical intern
  • general practitioner
  • hospital medical officer
  • medical specialist
  • general practitioner in urban, rural and remote settings.

Flinders University recognises international secondary schooling for direct entry to undergraduate programs.

  • Occupational English Test (OET): 350 Speaking, 350 Writing, 350 Reading, 350 Listening
  • Duolingo: Not accepted
