COURSE DESCRIPTION

Turn science fiction dreams into reality and build a career creating a world of intelligent communicating computers and gadgets. You’ll study at the leading edge of AI science and learn how artificial intelligence is integrated into areas as diverse as health, online shopping and driverless transport. You’ll gain the skills to build systems that have humanlike intelligence and understand human expression, emotion and body language.

What you will study

First year

A typical first year may include:

  • core computational Intelligence topics introducing key concepts, terminology, skills and tools, including neural networks and language technology
  • an introduction to computer programming
  • introductory topics in robotics, networking, mathematics/statistics and professional skills.

Second year

A typical second year may include:

  • an intermediate computer programming topic
  • core topics on computer mathematics, computer networks, and web development
  • a selection of topics to build skills related to language, neuroscience or robotics.

Third year

A typical third year may include:

  • a complex computer programming topic
  • core topics in the theory and practice of computation, advanced database and intelligent systems
  • a selection of topics relating to multimodal computing, games, simulation and robotics
  • 12 weeks of work experience or a group project building an intelligent system while learning project management skills.

Honours year

A typical honours year may include:

  • an in-depth investigation of a particular area in a major research project
  • a selection of topics from a range of areas, particularly research methods, computer science, information technology and software engineering.

Your career

Your degree is the first step towards a range of employment opportunities including public and private agencies, start-up companies and consultancies. Career opportunities extend beyond the computing industry into intelligent transport and logistics, buildings and infrastructure, health, aerospace and defence.

REQUIREMENTS

Flinders University recognises international secondary schooling for direct entry to undergraduate programs.

SACE stage two general mathematics or equivalent.

English language requirements

  • IELTS (Academic): 6.0 Overall with 6.0 Speaking, 6.0 Writing;
  • TOEFL iBT: 72 Overall with 18 Speaking, 21 Writing;
  • Pearson PTE Academic: 50 Overall with 50 Speaking, 50 Writing;
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced: 169 Overall with 169 Writing, 169 Speaking;
  • Occupational English Test (OET): 300 Speaking, 300 Writing; Duolingo (Up to and including Semester 2, 2024): Overall 95-100
