COURSE DESCRIPTION

Get the skills to investigate, plan, design, manufacture and maintain systems and equipment that are used in all aspects of health care. You will gain a solid education in both engineering and medical science, along with important practical skills and the ability to work as part of an effective team.

What you will study

First year

A typical first year may include:

core topics in electronics, professional skills, engineering programming, engineering physics and materials, engineering mechanics, mathematics, and human physiology and structure.

Second year

A typical second year may include:

  • core topics in engineering design, engineering mathematics, analysis of engineering systems, biomechanics, biomedical instrumentation, sensors and actuators, and human physiology
  • an electronics-based or mechanics-based engineering topic.

Third year

A typical third year may include:

  • core topics in computer programming, project management for engineering and science, physiological measurement, and workplace preparation
  • a 20-week industry placement program
  • a selection of electronics-based or mechanics-based engineering topics.

Honours year

A typical honours year may include:

  • a major biomedical engineering research thesis allowing high-performing students to progress to a higher degree by research
  • topics in innovation in medical devices and standards, ethics and compliance
  • a selection of electives in allied science and engineering areas.

Your career

Graduates often work in multidisciplinary teams with health professionals and medical specialists and may find themselves in a variety of areas including the design and production of diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment in hospitals, devices to assist in home-based health care and rehabilitation, and sensory and control systems.

Potential occupations include:

  • biomedical engineer
  • clinical support specialist consultant
  • customer support engineer
  • pathology field service engineer
  • instrumentation engineer.

Potential employers include:

  • hospital trusts
  • medical equipment manufacturers
  • university research departments
  • other research units and rehabilitation or health charities.

REQUIREMENTS

Flinders University recognises international secondary schooling for direct entry to undergraduate programs.

SACE stage two specialist mathematics or mathematical methods or equivalent. Knowledge of SACE stage two physics or equivalent is assumed.

English language requirements

  • IELTS (Academic): 6.0 Overall with 6.0 Speaking, 6.0 Writing;
  • TOEFL iBT: 72 Overall with 18 Speaking, 21 Writing;
  • Pearson PTE Academic: 50 Overall with 50 Speaking, 50 Writing;
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced: 169 Overall with 169 Writing, 169 Speaking;
  • Occupational English Test (OET): 300 Speaking, 300 Writing; Duolingo (Up to and including Semester 2, 2024): Overall 95-100
