COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Master of Engineering Science (Biomedical) equips students with the skills to investigate, plan, design, manufacture and maintain systems and equipment that are used in all aspects of health care.

Throughout the course, there is a strong emphasis on practical skills and teamwork. Graduates often work in multi-disciplinary teams with health professionals and medical specialists in hospitals and public and private sector organisations. They use their professional skills and knowledge in the systematic development of complex systems with particular emphasis on biomedical systems. This includes the design or production of:

  • A wide range of sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment in hospitals
  • Devices to assist in home-based health care and rehabilitation, including prosthetic and biomechanical devices.

What you will study

You will be provided with study in both the theoretical and practical aspects of engineering, and the course builds on your previous experience and knowledge.

Topics cover areas such as physics, materials, mechanics, mathematics, project management and innovation, and a masters research project.

In addition, the Master of Engineering Science (Biomedical) may include topics in:

  • programming
  • physiological measurement
  • human physiology
  • biomedical instrumentation
  • programming
  • electronics
  • microprocessors
  • analysis of engineering systems
  • sensors and actuators
  • control systems
  • fluid mechanics
  • solid mechanics
  • biomechanics.

Your career

Graduates often work in multidisciplinary teams with health professionals and medical specialists in hospitals and public and private sector organisations.
