COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course is designed to provide students with a sound understanding and appreciation of current issues and skills in Environmental Management.

The course examines environmental policies, strategies and management systems, with a major focus on the recognition and development of Sustainable Environmental Management in both urban and non-urban environments.

Students may also undertake some study of specific environmental problems, research methods, Geographical Information systems, and environmental economics, philosophy or politics.

The course is international in scope, but case study material will draw especially on the experience of Australia and other countries within the Asia-Pacific region.

Learning outcomes

Students who complete The Master of Environmental Management will be able to:

  • demonstrate an advanced understanding and appreciation of current issues in Environmental Management
  • identify and understand the main theories, issues and complexities shaping the environment in which contemporary policymakers work
  • demonstrate and apply an advanced understanding of Sustainable Development practices in both urban and non-urban environments
  • demonstrate and apply a sound understanding of the challenge of Environmental Management and associated Environmental Management tools
  • demonstrate knowledge of research principles and methods and complete a research project.

Your career

Graduates are qualified to understand the world as an integrated whole. They use a powerful mix of interdisciplinary skills to solve a range of problems. They can analyse and synthesise complex environmental, economic, social and political information to enable an understanding of dynamic human-environment relationships.

Graduates are proficient at retrieving, synthesising and communicating information, as well as managing data and drawing on different sources of knowledge. They think critically and creatively, and work effectively in teams and on their own initiative. For these reasons graduates are highly employable in a wide variety of fields within and outside environmental management.

Potential occupations include:

  • policy officer
  • research officer
  • planning officer
  • on-ground manager
  • environmental consultant.

Potential employers include:

  • government organisations
  • non-government organisations
  • the private sector.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants for the masters must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution.

English language requirements

IELTS (Academic): 6.0 Overall with 6.0 Speaking, 6.0 Writing; TOEFL iBT: 72 Total score with 18 Speaking, 21 Writing; Pearson PTE Academic: 50 Overall with 50 Speaking, 50 Writing; Cambridge C1 Advanced: 169 Overall with 169 Speaking, 169 Writing; Occupational English Test (OET): 300 Speaking, 300 Writing, 300 Reading, 300 Listening; Duolingo (Up to and including Semester 2, 2024): Overall 95-100
