COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Acute Care specialisation is offered by the College of Nursing and Health Sciences and is completed as part of the Master of Nursing (Coursework and Specialisation).

The specialisation aims to

  • facilitate development of specialised knowledge, skills and attributes for application in a range of acute care nursing environments
  • extend student knowledge in research for practice development

Learning outcomes

In addition to the Learning Outcomes of the Master of Nursing (Coursework and Specialisation), on completion of this course, students in the Acute Care specialisation will be able to:

  • critically analyse the concepts and theory around recognition, response and management of the acute, complex and/or critically-ill deteriorating patient in a range of acute care settings
  • identify and enact relevant international, national, state and territory strategic health care goals in acute care nursing environments
  • apply concepts and theories around recognition, response and management of the acute, complex and/or critically-ill deteriorating patient in a simulated acute care setting

Your career

Graduates are suitable for careers in a wide range of nursing-related fields. Our courses will give registered nurses the opportunity to provide skillful care to individuals, families and communities to prevent illness, promote healthy lifestyles and manage a range of emerging complex health issues.

Applicants must provide a supporting statement nominating their area of clinical preference in acute care nursing for university sourced observational professional experience placement. Areas of clinical preference include:

  • cardiac
  • critical care
  • emergency
  • high dependency
  • mental health
  • paediatrics.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must normally hold a nursing degree or equivalent and must be registered nurses in a country other than Australia. Applicants must also provide a supporting statement nominating their area of clinical preference in acute care nursing for university sourced observational professional experience placement. The course will not lead to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

TOEFL iBT: 79 Overall with 18 Speaking, 21 Writing, 13 Reading, 12 Listening;
Pearson PTE Academic: 58 Overall with 50 Speaking, 50 Writing, 50 Reading, 50 Listening;
Cambridge C1 Advanced: 176 Overall with 169 Speaking, 169 Writing, 169 Reading,169 Listening;
Occupational English Test (OET): 300 Speaking, 300 Writing, 300 Reading, 300 Listening; Duolingo (Up to and including Semester 2, 2024): Overall 105-110
