COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Overview

This course is designed for both aspiring managers and people currently employed in business or management. The program will provide you with the understanding, knowledge and skills necessary to explain and discuss essential principles and practices of business. These are delivered through the core subjects in business and management.

The core curriculum develops your understanding and ability to interpret financial statements and marketing plans, analyse markets, read audit reports and develop business plans.

Knowing how to read financial statements is important during the evaluation of a vendor’s financial standing. Knowing how to interpret marketing plans and conduct a market analyse will help you identify a vendor’s strengths and overall strategies.

On completion of the Holmes’ Graduate Diploma in Business you will have developed a broad business mindset.

Course Structure

The Graduate Diploma in Business is a one-year course, delivered over two trimesters on a full-time basis. To meet the requirements for graduation, all students must successfully complete 8 units.

Qualification

On successful completion of this course, students are awarded the Graduate Diploma in Business. The course meets the Australian Qualifications Framework specifications for a Level 8 graduate diploma degree.

Opportunities for Further Study

An Australian GDB equips a graduate to go on and apply to enrol in the Master of Business Administration or the Master of Professional Accounting at Holmes Institute and receive up to 8 credits. There are also opportunities to enrol and gain credits in postgraduate business courses at other higher education institutions.

Career Opportunities

Potential careers exist in industry and government, for graduates as the course improves their ability to run and manage a business, or helps them move into a management role. Graduates are equipped to understand mid-level management roles in a broad spectrum of industries.

Assessment

Throughout the course, students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of a particular competency to be deemed competent. Assessment methods in the course have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.

Assessment will incorporate a variety of methods including assignments, journals, presentation, test and examinations. These tasks could be undertaken as an individual or group.

Students are advised of the assessment requirements for a unit in the unit outline.

REQUIREMENTS

An Australian Bachelor degree or equivalent; OR An Australian Graduate Certificate; OR Advanced Diploma/Associate Degree (or equivalent including overseas associate degree) plus evidence of a minimum of five years’ demonstrable relevant industry experience.

Overseas students must demonstrate English proficiency through one of the following means.

a) Successful completion of studies in English such as Year 12 at Australian High School or an Australian Diploma or higher qualification;

b) Successful studies at a recognised Australian educational institution at an equivalent study level based on at least a 50% pass rate in a recent semester of study;

c) An English test score using one of the following English language Tests as approved by Holmes:

An English test score with minimum requirements as follows:

• IELTS Overall 6.0 with no band score lower than 5.5; OR

• PTE Academic Score of 46; OR

• TOEFL iBT Score of 60-78; OR

• Cambridge English: Advanced from Cambridge ESOL (CAE) Score of 169, OR Equivalent as determined by Holmes English Placement Test
