COURSE DESCRIPTION

This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide services to clients in relation to mental health issues. They can provide counselling, referral, advocacy and education/health promotion services.

These workers are required to have high level specialist knowledge, skills and competencies especially in regard to laws affecting people with mental health issues, the range of services available to them and health issues related to mental health.

Workers in this field will run early intervention and health promotion programs, and research and apply evidence to their practice. They will also develop the skills required to advocate on behalf of people with complex coexisting mental health, drug, and alcohol issues.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed 160 hours of clinical placement as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

What you will learn

This qualification will provide you with the core skills required to provide a range of community services such as rehabilitating and supporting individuals who are affected by mental illness and psychiatric disability and how to implement community-based activities with these individuals.

During your studies some of the things you will learn include:

  • How to work with diverse people
  • Intervention, health prevention and promotion strategies
  • How to implement trauma informed care
  • How to assist clients with medication
  • How to work in a context with alcohol and drug issues

Course structure

There are 20 units to be completed during this course – 15 core and 5 elective units, in accordance with the packaging rules.

REQUIREMENTS

  • 18 years or above
  • Completion of High School (Year 12); or equivalent qualification/s
  • Academic IELTS 5.5 overall
