COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Certificate III in Horticulture at TAFE NSW will equip you with the practical skills and knowledge you need to work as a gardener, horticulturalist or landscaper in the diverse global horticulture industry.

You will develop a broad range of horticultural skills and build your expertise in areas including arboriculture, chemical use, industry work practices, irrigation and water, plants, soils, and pest management.

Learn to create and nurture different types of green environments that are both beautiful and functional. As a TAFE NSW student, you will learn in industry-standard facilities including greenhouses and shade houses, and have access to industry-standard machinery, tools, materials and growing media.

Through theory and practical course work you will learn to:

Plan and install irrigation systems
Control weeds, pests and disease
Determine and carry out plant nutrition requirements
Contribute to work health and safety practices

TAFE NSW is known for delivering theory along with practical learning. You will strengthen your skills in horticulture, including:

Recognising common and rare plants species
Establishing and maintaining grassed and planted areas
Implementing a pest control solution
Improving soil in gardens and turfed areas
Specialist amenity pruning techniques

High-tech agricultural production is changing the skills needed in the horticulture production industry with vertical farming, soilless-farming (using aeroponic or hydroponic systems) and drones increasingly used in large-scale operations.

REQUIREMENTS

Year 10 or equivalent

English Language Requirements:

Academic IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL (iBT) 46 or equivalent
Or Completion of a TAFE NSW General English Program
