As a PhD student you will work with increased independence, under the direction of a supervisory panel of experts in the field. Your research will make an original and important contribution to human knowledge, research and development.
The PhD program offers students access to state-of-the-art optical, infra-red, radio, and computational facilities and draws on the expertise of some 50 RSAA astronomers, as well as researchers at CSIRO’s Australia Telescope National Facility, the Australian Astronomical Observatory, and collaborators around the world.
The main research areas at RSAA include:
Observational and theoretical aspects of extra-solar planets
Stellar atmospheres and evolution
The interstellar medium
Galactic structure and stellar populations
The Magellanic Clouds and dwarf galaxies
The formation and evolution of galaxies
Supernovae and gamma-ray bursts
Cosmology

REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must:
1. Present a relevant Bachelor Honours degree or international equivalent
- With a minimum grade of First Class Honours (H1);
- or an equivalent combination of qualifications, research publications and/or professional experience related to the field of study.
2. Provide:
- Original evidence of all relevant academic qualifications and graduation documentation (with English translation as appropriate);
- An up-to-date CV including academic qualifications, work experience and research publications;
- At least three reports of which a minimum of two must be academic referee reports.
English Language Requirements
IELTS Academic and IELTS UKVI Academic [excluding One Skill Retake and IELTS Online] – Overall score of 6.5 overall with minimum 6.0 in each band.
TOEFL iBT Paper Edition and TOEFL iBT [excluding Paper Edition and Home Edition] – Overall score of 80 (Reading – 20; Writing – 20; Listening – 18; Speaking – 18).
Cambridge C1 Advanced – Overall score of 176 minimum 169 in each band.
PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI [excluding PTE Academic Online] – Overall score of 64 minimum 55 in each band.
