COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Master of Medicine (by Research) at University of Melbourne is available to medical graduates of at least two years standing and not less than two years experience as a medical officer in a hospital affiliated to an appropriate university for the purpose of teaching.

The program gives students the opportunity to undertake research on a specific area of medicine under academic supervision. The degree can be undertaken in the following departments of the Melbourne Medical School:

  • General Practice
  • Medicine, St Vincent’s Hospital
  • Medicine, Western Precinct
  • Paediatrics, Royal Children’s Hospital

On completion of the course you should be able to:

  • demonstrate advanced learning in research skills and mastery of appropriate techniques, such as the use of archival or primary evidence, analysis of data, judgment of conflicting evidence, etc;
  • demonstrate specialist knowledge in the area of your research;
  • present the results of your research in publishable form or work towards incorporating your findings in further research;
  • proceed to a research doctorate if the Masters thesis has demonstrated appropriate research potential;
  • gain admission to certain types of employment through this specialist qualification;
  • apply the research skills acquired to other projects;
  • demonstrate an understanding of, and commitment to, research ethics or code of practice.
