COURSE DESCRIPTION

As access to technologies increases in today’s classrooms, it’s crucial to understand how to use it safely, ethically and appropriately. This Melbourne MicroCert is ideal for K-12 educators and school leaders who want a deeper understanding of how to use technology in schools and ensure students are acting as responsible digital citizens. Learning is mapped to Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) and International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards. Model and teach positive digital citizenship: Examine the responsible use of digital technologies, online safety and digital health and wellbeing, and consider the ethical dilemmas that arise when humans and technology interact. Explore the concept of digital citizenship and how you can model and teach this to your students. Gain strategies for managing online student interactions: Explore strategies and scenarios for managing online student interactions, bullying, feedback, moderation and peer-to-peer learning in new and emerging digital environments, including augmented reality and virtual reality. Review online learning spaces to ensure they are safe and ethical. Integrate digital resources into curricula: Develop critical frameworks for examining pedagogical and curriculum decisions related to teaching with digital technology, including concepts of identity, community, privacy, ownership and trust in digital spaces. Explore how to appropriately integrate digital resources into your curricula. Become an advocate for safe use of technology in your school: Evaluate existing tools and digital resources for promoting digital citizenship. Develop educational materials to use with students and other teachers in your school to help you advocate for positive digital citizenship.

Skills and learning outcomes: By the end of this course, you’ll have a deeper understanding of how to safely encourage the use of technology in your school and advocate for positive digital citizenship. You’ll be able to: Integrate digital citizenship topics into existing curricula; Develop educational materials to use with students and other teachers as a leader and advocate for digital citizenship; Critically appraise the appropriate existing tools for promoting digital citizenship.
