COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Doctor of Education consists of four courses of study relating to research methodology and scholarly writing as well as a research component related to the education profession. The research component can either be a number of peer-reviewed research papers or a thesis. As a candidate, you will collect, analyse and interpret data in an area of education of interest to you.

The Doctor of Education program at The University of Notre Dame Australia is designed for leaders in education, and aspiring leaders in the school, university and TAFE sectors. You will be admitted to the program only if you can demonstrate the potential to complete doctoral coursework and research, possess professional educational experience and have satisfactory research experience as determined by the Dean of the School of Education, Sydney.

Over your studies, you will work collaboratively in groups of 10 to collect, analyse and interpret data to answer questions in an area of education of interest. Each group will be supervised by a group of five School of Education, Sydney lecturers. As a thesis by publication program, the degree is awarded on the basis of four coursework units relating to research methodology and scholarly writing, and a portfolio of a minimum of four peer-reviewed papers.

  • Education and technology
  • Educational leadership
  • ICT and mobile learning
  • Religious education

The University of Notre Dame Australia is dedicated to building a strong and innovative research culture. The Doctor of Education is a research degree that combines coursework in research training with a thesis of approximately 80,000 words in length. Previous experience in research is required for your acceptance into this degree, although additional research training is also provided in the coursework component.

About this program

The Professional Doctorate is a research degree designed to meet the needs of professionals who aspire to achieve academic excellence and lead the development of knowledge within their profession. The program seeks to examine crucial professional topics and integrate professional experience with scholarly inquiry. In particular, it aims to generate a research-based approach, providing answers to questions relevant to the professions or industry and encouraging a systematic way of collecting, analysing and interpreting data. For this reason, we recommend you seek the support of a relevant professional body, employer or industry group in defining your research area.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants to the Doctor of Education Award are expected to satisfy the following criteria:

  • Possession of a research Masters degree by thesis or dissertation appropriate to the professional field of the applicant; or
  • Possession of a research Masters degree by thesis or dissertation appropriate to the professional field of the applicant; or
  • Possession of a Masters degree by coursework appropriate to the professional field of the applicant completed at a superior standard; or
  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree with Honours (typically 1st Class or Class 2A Honours level or equivalent); or
  • Possession of a Master of Philosophy; or
  • In exceptional circumstances, an equivalent academic or professional background that is considered by the Dean of the School to be an appropriate preparation for independent study and research work at Doctoral level.

IELTS Academic – 7.0 overall, with no score lower than 7.0 in writing and no other individual band score lower than 6.5; CAE/CPE – 185 overall, with no score lower than 185 in writing and no other band score lower than 176; PTE Academic – 68 overall, with no score lower than 68 in writing and no other band score lower than 58; TOEFL (iBT) – 94 overall, with no score lower than 27 in writing and no other individual band score lower than 20
