Most graduate podiatrists will work in private practice, clinics or hospitals and see an interesting and wide range of patients with foot and leg problems often associated with other medical conditions. Many podiatrists develop expertise in a specific area of podiatry, such as the management of sporting injuries or podiatric biomechanics, treatment of the high-risk foot, the elderly or children’s foot and leg problems.
A variety of teaching methods will be used, including lectures, tutorials, practical training and directed self-learning. Case-based and problem-based learning will be used to emphasise patient focused practice. Clinical practice will start in second year and follow into the third year.
Course structure
Postgraduate coursework degrees and combined (coursework and research) degrees comprise a number of units.

Further Study
A 3-year full-time, or 6-year part-time, Doctor of Podiatric Surgery (DPS) course is available for suitable graduates who wish to specialise in elective foot surgery. Research degrees are also available, Doctor of Podiatry or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) for graduate podiatrists interested in a career in clinical research.
REQUIREMENTS
Successful applicants who gain a place in an Assured Pathway to Podiatric Medicine will commence in a UWA Bachelor’s degree and on completion progress to their assured place in the postgraduate Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM).
The Assured Pathway place in the DPM is conditional on:
successful completion of a UWA bachelor’s degree with DPM prerequisites and a minimum selection GPA of 5.0 and appropriate prerequisite units; and
retention of international student status
Assured Pathway students who undertake the Podiatric Health and Medical Sciences extended major within their bachelor’s degree will commence the DPM in the second year and can complete both degrees with five years of study. Students may choose to do a different major or bachelor’s degree in which case it will take a minimum six years of study to complete both degrees.
Graduate entry to Podiatric Medicine
Bachelor’s degree holders or students who are in progress of their first bachelor’s degree may be eligible to apply for graduate entry into the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM).
English language requirements:
TOEFL (paper-based): 570 with a Test of Written English (TWE) of no less than 4.5
IBT TOEFL (Internet-based test score): 82 with 22 for writing, 20 for speaking, 20 for listening, and 18 for reading
IELTS (Academic): overall score of at least 7.0 and no band less than 7.0
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English: C pass
Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English: B grade
Pearson Test of English (PTE) (Academic): Overall score of 64 with a minimum score of 64 in the Reading and Writing sections, 59 in the Speaking section and 54 in the Listening section
