COURSE DESCRIPTION
Meeting the ever increasing energy needs of the world’s population is a major challenge. Geoscientists use their understanding of Earth processes through deep time and their ability to integrate multiple datasets to secure vital energy supplies. Geoscientists need to be adaptive in a changing industry and contribute their skills to global CO2 emission reduction and sustainable practices. This course provides you with the knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems in the field of energy geoscience.
This course will enable you to develop skills in geological and geophysical data analysis and integration of datasets related to sedimentary basin analysis and energy geoscience. Emphasis is placed on the development of practical skills underpinned by conceptual knowledge, and the application of both to solving problems related to basin history and petroleum exploration through coursework and research project components of the course.
Course structure
Postgraduate coursework degrees and combined (coursework and research) degrees comprise a number of units.
Why study this course at UWA?
Perth is located at the heart of the oil and gas industry in Australasia and is close to the major petroleum-producing regions of South East Asia. You’ll benefit from UWA’s geographic proximity and our collaborative research relationships with this important industry.
Benefit from the knowledge of leading researchers as well as the experience of guest lecturers from the oil and gas industry.
Access world-class research facilities at the School of Earth Sciences and UWA’s Centre for Energy Geoscience.
You’ll learn to
Develop advanced knowledge of geological concepts and processes relevant to sedimentary basin development, and their application to exploration of petroleum systems
Apply advanced practical skills for solving geological problems of relevance to petroleum exploration involving integration of geological and geophysical data
Analyse and interpret geoscience data, developing technical skills that focus on conceptual knowledge of processes and materials
Interpret and integrate geoscience data, whilst applying advanced skills to further understand the development of sedimentary basins and petroleum systems
Accurately record, interpret and communicate geoscience data via 2D summaries, 3D models, written work and oral presentations
