COURSE DESCRIPTION

This degree combines coursework units in a variety of forensic disciplines with a research thesis in an area of your choice.

The Master of Forensic Science and Doctor of Philosophy is a multidisciplinary degree that focuses on scientific methods for investigating crime, while also addressing the needs of forensic investigations within allied industries.

Course structure

Postgraduate research degrees are identified by an intensive research component.

Career Pathways

Forensic scientists may have a wide variety of responsibilities including identifying illicit drugs; analysing drugs and poisons in human tissue and body fluids; examining and comparing materials such as fibres, paints, cosmetics, oils, fuels, plastics, glass, metals, soils and gunshot residues; and examining human and animal biological material to be compared with victims and suspects using DNA profiling.

Further Study

Students may choose to pursue further studies in other areas of research related to forensic science.

REQUIREMENTS

To be considered for admission to this course an applicant must have—(a) had a PhD proposal approved by the Board of the Graduate Research School; or(b) an honours degree of at least 2A level or equivalent and have completed the first year of the course leading to the degree of Master of Forensic Science.

English language requirements:

TOEFL (paper-based): 570 with a Test of Written English (TWE) of no less than 4.5

IBT TOEFL (Internet-based test score): 82 with 22 for writing, 20 for speaking, 20 for listening, and 18 for reading

IELTS (Academic): 6.5 (no band lower than 6.0)

Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English: C pass

Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English: B grade

Pearson Test of English (PTE) (Academic): Overall score of 64 with a minimum score of 64 in the Reading and Writing sections, 59 in the Speaking section and 54 in the Listening section
