COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Associate Degree in Teaching (Pacific Focus) is a unique teacher education course developed specifically for educators in Pacific Island contexts. The course offers three career pathways for graduates and is a gateway to completing further studies toward a Bachelor of Education (Pacific Focus). This initial-teacher education qualification encompasses working with children in Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, and Secondary Education.

Being a teacher is a rewarding career and this program aims to provide Pacific Island educators with necessary professional skills and qualifications to meet the needs of current and future generations of students. Students will have opportunities to develop their skills, knowledge and aptitudes for contributing to one of the largest professions worldwide.

This course is a two-year pre-service teaching qualification. It is designed to suit the Pacific context and meets requirements of Pacific Island Nation Education Acts that require a two-year teaching qualification. This course is not accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA).

Course Aims

The course aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills and qualifications to be effective two-year trained educators in Early Childhood, Primary or Secondary Education in the Pacific Island Context, demonstrating and applying in this context broad knowledge and skills relating to the seven elements prescribed by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

know their students and how students learn;

know their subject/content and how to teach that content to their students;

plan for and implement effective teaching and learning;

create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments;

assess, provide feedback and report on student learning;

continually improve by engaging in professional learning; and

continually engage professionally with colleagues, parents/careers and the community.

REQUIREMENTS

Students must have completed an educational qualification considered equivalent to Year 12 in Australia. Entry requirements vary from country to country

An IELTS (Academic) overall score of at least 6.0 with no sub-band less than 5.5; or equivalent TOEFL score of at least 213 in the computer-based test; or at least 79 in the internet-based test with no less than 22 in the written component; or a PTE Academic minimum overall score of 57 with no skill less than 50;

The University of New England was originally formed in 1938 as the New England University College, a College of the University of Sydney. It became fully independent in 1954. The university is located on several sites in Armidale, NSW. All the programs are offered via the four faculties: Arts; Economics, Business and Law; Education, Health and Professional Studies; and The Sciences; these faculties incorporate 18 teaching schools. Research is offered in the areas of rural science, agricultural economics, geology, educational administration, linguistics, archaeology, etc.
