COURSE DESCRIPTION
Teaching is a rewarding career choice for those who enjoy being part of children’s development. The professional skills learned will be valued by the community and will bring teachers into contact with people of all ages. Teachers are members of one of the largest professions of our society. The degree will give students the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to become a successful secondary teacher. Students are encouraged to be independent learners who are able to adapt efficiently and constructively to meet the changes which occur in the teaching profession.
Trimester 3 admission is only available on a part-time basis and the Mathematics & Physics Teaching Area is not available for a trimester 3 commencement.
Course Aims
The Bachelor of Education (Secondary Science) aims to provide graduates with:
(i) an accredited professional qualification meeting the requirements of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) for initial teacher education programs, and ensuring all graduates meet the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Career Stage; and
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- satisfy the seven elements prescribed by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership:
- know their students and how students learn;
- know their subject/content and how to teach that content to their students;
- plan for and implement effective teaching and learning;
- create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments;
- assess, provide feedback and report on student learning;
- continually improve by engaging in professional learning; and
- continually engage professionally with colleagues, parents/careers and the community.
REQUIREMENTS
For direct admission into undergraduate courses offered by UNE you must have completed an educational qualification considered to be at least equivalent to completion of Year 12 in Australia. Entry requirements vary from country to country
An IELTS (Academic) overall score of at least 6.0 with no sub-band less than 5.5; or equivalent TOEFL score of at least 213 in the computer-based test; or at least 79 in the internet-based test with no less than 22 in the written component; or a PTE Academic minimum overall score of 57 with no skill less than 50;
EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION
The University of New England was originally formed in 1938 as the New England University College, a College of the University of Sydney. It became fully independent in 1954. The university is located on several sites in Armidale, NSW. All the programs are offered via the four faculties: Arts; Economics, Business and Law; Education, Health and Professional Studies; and The Sciences; these faculties incorporate 18 teaching schools. Research is offered in the areas of rural science, agricultural economics, geology, educational administration, linguistics, archaeology, etc.
