COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course has the general aim of providing a formal academic qualification for people who wish to obtain training at the tertiary level in a selected or general area of agriculture, without the need to commit themselves to a full degree program. It is an ideal program for those who need to undertake a refresher course in a particular discipline or who wish to broaden their knowledge.

This course includes two (2) weeks of formal work integrated learning.

On completion of the Diploma students may enrol for the Bachelor of Agriculture and are able to count units already completed towards the Diploma.

Course Aims

The Diploma in Agricultural Studies seeks to provide a formal qualification at tertiary level and is designed to broaden agricultural knowledge or provide an entry pathway to or exit pathway from bachelor courses.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:

  • demonstrate current, technical and theoretical knowledge of agricultural science;
  • use and apply technical, field and/or laboratory scientific methods relevant to agricultural systems to solve problems;
  • use scientific literacy and communication skills to demonstrate understanding of agriculture for a range of stakeholders;
  • identify, analyse and act on information from a range of sources to apply solutions in known or changing agricultural contexts; and
  • transfer knowledge and specialised skills to others and demonstrate understanding of knowledge.

Career Outcomes

UNE’s Diploma in Agricultural Studies will provide you with the skills and knowledge to contribute effectively to sustainable agricultural production in technical and support roles.

REQUIREMENTS

A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission, Credit and Enrolment Guidelines).

Inherent Requirements

Students must meet the Inherent Requirements in order to complete this course.

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing is not granted for units taken to meet course admission requirements (except where approved for units completed as part of the UNE Pathways Enabling Course or the TRACKS Tertiary Preparation Program or an approved articulation in the course).

Advanced standing will be granted for units which are deemed to be equivalent to units offered by the University and approved for the course as follows:

  • (a) a maximum of 24 credit points for units completed at the University or another institution; or
  • (b) no limit will apply to advanced standing which is granted for units completed at the University and which have not been counted towards another qualification.

An IELTS (Academic) overall score of at least 6.0 with no sub-band less than 5.5; or equivalent TOEFL score of at least 213 in the computer-based test; or at least 79 in the internet-based test with no less than 22 in the written component; or a PTE Academic minimum overall score of 57 with no skill less than 50.

The University of New England was originally formed in 1938 as the New England University College, a College of the University of Sydney. It became fully independent in 1954. The university is located on several sites in Armidale, NSW. All the programs are offered via the four faculties: Arts; Economics, Business and Law; Education, Health and Professional Studies; and The Sciences; these faculties incorporate 18 teaching schools. Research is offered in the areas of rural science, agricultural economics, geology, educational administration, linguistics, archaeology, etc.
