COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed for professionals to study in depth a range of areas related to education. Participants may choose from a range of units from different areas or specialise in the areas of Gifted and Talented: Teaching for High Potential; Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) (also known as Teaching English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D)); or Careers and Transition Education.
Some units are related to the school curriculum. However, these units are not intended for the purposes of teacher preparation in any particular method.
The course articulates with the Master of Education and so provides a pathway for candidates wishing to pursue further study.
Note: The TESOL specialisation is only available to candidates commencing in Trimester 1.
Course Aims
This course aims to provide advanced knowledge and skills for professional educators. It is a flexible distance education program that provides a pathway for further learning.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- demonstrate specialised and applied knowledge of education as an academic discipline;
- communicate a well-developed personal theory of education as it relates to their field of study;
- demonstrate an understanding of current and relevant research literature in their field of study; and
- apply specialised knowledge of discipline to a relevant professional situation.
REQUIREMENTS
A candidate shall:
(a) hold a three-year or four year pre-service teaching qualification of a recognised University or tertiary institution (AQF Level 7); or
(b) hold an (AQF Level 7) Bachelor degree and a one or two year pre-service teaching qualification (AQF level 7, 8, 9) of a recognised University or tertiary institution; or
(c) hold a bachelor degree (AQF Level 7) in a relevant discipline and have at least one year full-time (or equivalent) work experience (TESOL specialisation only); and
For direct admission into undergraduate courses offered by UNE you must have completed an educational qualification considered to be at least equivalent to completion of Year 12 in Australia. Entry requirements vary from country to country
An IELTS (Academic) overall score of at least 6.0 with no sub-band less than 5.5; or equivalent TOEFL score of at least 213 in the computer-based test; or at least 79 in the internet-based test with no less than 22 in the written component; or a PTE Academic minimum overall score of 57 with no skill less than 50.

The University of New England was originally formed in 1938 as the New England University College, a College of the University of Sydney. It became fully independent in 1954. The university is located on several sites in Armidale, NSW. All the programs are offered via the four faculties: Arts; Economics, Business and Law; Education, Health and Professional Studies; and The Sciences; these faculties incorporate 18 teaching schools. Research is offered in the areas of rural science, agricultural economics, geology, educational administration, linguistics, archaeology, etc.
