COURSE DESCRIPTION
Overview
UniSQ’s Graduate Diploma of Counselling (Foundations of Practice) is designed to provide you with foundational knowledge and skills required for counselling practice.
During this degree you will study counselling frameworks, professional practice and ethics, and counselling assessment and interventions.
The knowledge you acquire will be transferable between nursing, psychology, teaching, welfare, human services or allied health practices.
While study is mainly external, you will be required to attend mandatory residential schools at UniSQ Ipswich campus associated with four designated courses to meet the required number of hours of face-to-face instruction and ensure you have the best possible skills preparation.
Further study
If you’d like to go on to study the Master of Counselling, you need to complete at least 50 percent of the Graduate Diploma of Counselling course load (including two Foundation of Practice courses).
Professional accreditation
Graduates of the Graduate Diploma of Counselling will be able to apply for membership of the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and registration as a counsellor with the Australian Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (ARCAP).
Career outcomes
As a graduate, your counselling and case management skills will provide you with the opportunity to work in a professional nursing, psychology, teaching, welfare, human services or allied health practices.
Note: The four Foundations of Practice courses within this major all have mandatory residential schools on-campus at Ipswich.
REQUIREMENTS
A bachelor’s degree from a recognised university.
IELTS (Academic only) – Overall minimum score of 6.5 and no individual band score of less than 6.0; TOEFL (internet based) – Overall minimum score of 90 and no individual skills score of less than 20; Pearson (PTE Academic) – Overall score of 58 and no individual Communicative Skills score of less than 58; Cambridge C1 Advanced C2 Proficiency – Overall minimum score of 185 with no less than 185 in each skill.
