Having a creative mind allows us to see the world differently. Our students are imaginative and curious, they spend their time exploring topics that fascinate them. They want to follow an idea to its iterative conclusion, speculating on new outcomes and refining their practice along the way.
Whether you are interested in a specific practice or aspire to a multidisciplinary artistic career, the Bachelor of Fine Arts will prepare you with important skills for a fulfilling future of creativity and innovation. You’ll gain technical abilities across our range of studio practice options, including drawing and printmaking, object and furniture, painting, photography, sculpture, and time-based media.
Studying Critical Practices and studio-based making will contextualise your practice in the wider art landscape, connecting you to discourses that have shaped artists for over a millennium. As your degree unfolds, you’ll work with our creative community across different artistic disciplines allowing you to dream big, experiment and create.
Course objectives
This empowering, hands-on Fine Arts experience gives you specialist skills that can be applied into a range of exciting contexts and careers. With the added flexibility to choose units across the University, you can develop complementary skills in design, creative arts and health, music, media, and creative writing or explore history, politics, blue and green sciences, and other subjects to inspire your practice.
Learning Outcomes:
Produce conceptually multi-layered creative works and projects with speculative and iterative outcomes as a process of self-directed creative inquiry
Synthesise technical and theoretical knowledge to critically analyse ideas, artefacts and methods in the arts, and apply this analysis to appraise your own and others’ work.
Situate your practice within relevant and diverse contexts (e.g. social, cultural and historical)
Communicate complex ideas and processes effectively to audiences and stakeholders using written, oral and visual skills
Develop an autonomous and ethical creative practice that contributes to professional, scholarly, and social communities.
Career outcomes
Graduates from the Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours find employment in a variety of positions within the arts professions, including studio practice, theoretical writing on art, curatorial work, gallery administration, research and teaching, as well as participating in individual and group-generated projects.
REQUIREMENTS
Admission to undergraduate courses at the University of Tasmania requires the completion of qualifications equivalent to a 12th year of education in Australia.
You can also meet the General Entry Requirement for this course with the following qualifications or prior studies:
Completion of an equivalent AQF Certificate IV or above
Complete or incomplete (minimum 25 credit points) of previous tertiary study at Bachelor level or higher
You may also be required to submit a portfolio and statement if your previous studies are not in a related field.
English language test scores: IELTS (Academic) – 6.0 (no individual band less than 5.5); TOEFL (iBT) – 72 (no skill below: Reading 10; Listening 9; Speaking 16; Writing 19); PTE Academic – 50 with no score lower than 42; UTAS English for Academic Purposes – EAP2 – 60% (no individual score less than 55%); Cambridge English C1 Advanced or B2 First – 169 with no less than 162 in any skill; Australian Education Management Group (AEMG) DEP EAP2 – Minimum overall score of 70% and no section score of less than 65%.
EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION
The University of Tasmania was officially founded on 1st January 1890 and is located at Sandy Bay, Tasmania. In addition to the main campus at Sandy Bay, it also operates out of the Newnham Campus and the Cradle Coast Campus. The most popular courses offered are the environmental studies that include wilderness management, marine sciences and indigenous studies in Tasmanian literature. Other unconventional courses include agriculture development, studies on the community and population and ocean study programs. The university also comprises of a Music Conservatorium, Art school and a School of Clinical studies.
