If you don’t have a formal accounting qualification and want to break into this thriving field, our Master of Professional Accounting is the perfect place to start. You will have various opportunities to gain practical experience through internships via our Work Ready Program (available to students studying at our Launceston campus) and Tax Clinic (available to students studying at our Hobart and Launceston campuses), and our highly qualified industry experts will prepare you for accounting roles all over the world.

A career in accounting is about providing expert consultation and helping businesses with sound judgement and decision making.

Course objectives

The Master of Professional Accounting will provide you with a holistic overview of accounting in today’s business world, including the social, financial, and environmental impacts of the industry. You will engage with our Australian industry partners, such as KPMG, CPA, Blundstone, and Hazell Bros, all while learning in a supportive and interactive environment.

While you can study accounting anywhere in the world, by choosing to study in Tasmania you will be fully immersed in the uniqueness of Tasmanian industry. Our direct connection to industry means that you will develop a strong understanding of Tasmania’s key sectors, including aquaculture, agribusiness, export trade, and tourism.

While completing your degree, you will simultaneously be growing your professional network and enhancing your career prospects. Our industry workshops and internships allow you to meet real employers and see first-hand how professionals of all levels apply their skills in everyday work.

Learning Outcomes

1 Solve contemporary business problems using critical research techniques, applied accounting concepts, innovative thinking, while applying a sustainable business model lens.
2 Justify business ideas in complex contexts using effective oral and written communication techniques with both accounting and non-accounting professionals.
3 Research and analyse business performance and impacts to make recommendations to decision makers
4 Demonstrate collaboration, cooperation and teamwork when making collaborative decisions and working with people from diverse backgrounds.
5 Seek and reflect on feedback to improve personal, professional and ethical conduct and initiate learning opportunities for self and others.

Career outcomes

Accountants are needed in every industry. They provide sound advice on all financial aspects of a business, including financial reporting, taxation, auditing, cost management, and planning and decision making for organisations.

Specialisation: Accounting for Sustainable Business

This specialisation also includes the option of completing an internship unit providing students with the opportunity to directly apply theoretical learning in a practical and real-world environment.

REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for an offer, applicants must have: A completed undergraduate or postgraduate course in any discipline at Bachelor level (AQF level 7) or higher (or equivalent). Students having a prior qualification in accounting will be considered for recognition of prior learning (up to 4 units).

In addition to the requirements for international applicants must also provide one of the following:

IELTS 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0)

TOEFL (iBT) 72 (no skill below: Reading 16; Listening 16; Speaking 18; Writing 22)

PTE Academic 50 with no score lower than 50

UTAS English for Academic Purposes – EAP2 – 60% (no individual score less than 60%).

Cambridge CAE (Certificate of Advanced English) – B Grade

Cambridge CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English), Cambridge BEC (Business English Certificate) Higher – C Grade

In addition to the main campus at Sandy Bay, it also operates out of the Newnham Campus and the Cradle Coast Campus. The most popular courses offered are the environmental studies that include wilderness management, marine sciences and indigenous studies in Tasmanian literature. Other unconventional courses include agriculture development, studies on the community and population and ocean study programs. The university also comprises of a Music Conservatorium, Art school and a School of Clinical studies.
