COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is identical to the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Diploma in Professional Engineering Practice (C09067), with the exception that there is no Diploma in Professional Engineering Practice requirement.
This program is a comprehensive preparation for careers in the professional practice of engineering. Students learn to deal with complex systems and manage large-scale projects using the most appropriate emerging technologies.
Course structure
Students are required to complete 198 credit points, comprising:
core program: 48 credit points
major (field of practice), including capstone: 120 credit points
electives (see note): 24 credit points
professional practice program: 6 credit points, plus 12 weeks of industry experience.
Civil engineers plan, design, construct and maintain structures and infrastructures built above and below ground. These include roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, dams, water and wastewater plants, and buildings. Civil engineers work in planning, consulting or design. Students can also find civil engineers working on construction sites, managing and supervising projects.
Civil engineers use principles of calculus and trigonometry to analyse, design and troubleshoot. Strong project management, communication, leadership, critical thinking and leadership skills are required. Students learn the key skills including skills in construction and surveying needed to become a professional civil engineer. The properties and use of concrete, steel, timber and soil, plus the physics and mechanics of large and small structures are also studied. Students also gain expertise in water supply systems, flood protection, sanitation, hydraulics and waste disposal.
REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must have completed an Australian Year 12 qualification, Australian Qualifications Framework Diploma, or equivalent Australian or overseas qualification at the required level.
The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.
