COURSE DESCRIPTION

This program allows students to complete the Master of Engineering (ME) and the Master of Engineering Management (MEM) in two years of full-time study. The course follows an integrated approach to professional practice through professional engineering subjects, subjects relating to the major, an independent graduate project (in the area of the major), and a set of electives.

This course is for professional engineers who want to combine the Master of Engineering with a specific major with the Master of Engineering Management. This enables students to gain both technical and management skills in an accelerated way and complete two courses in two years rather than three years individually.

This major allows students to experience the possibilities that arise through the convergence of telecommunications and electronic systems. 5G networking, the Internet of Things (IoT), photonic and advanced transmission systems as well as advanced signal processing techniques enable new models of communication that far exceed previous capabilities. All of these areas are underpinned by recent developments in microelectronics and an increasing emphasis on cybersecurity. In this major, students start with a foundation of communication protocols and wireless sensor networks (for IoT). From there, they can choose from a range of subjects including next generation cellular networks, software defined networks, cybersecurity, adaptive signal processing and fabrication of sensors and components for IoT networks.

Course structure

Students are required to complete 96 credit points, comprising professional engineering/management subjects (42 credit points), a major (42 credit points) including an independent project, and electives (12 credit points). The project component consists of a preparatory subject and a project (in the area of the major) which must be undertaken in successive sessions, typically the final two sessions of the course.

Careers

Students who hold an undergraduate engineering degree are able to enhance their ability and knowledge through postgraduate-level studies in their respective majors, and gain knowledge and skills that enhance their ability to progress to engineering management roles.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

It is a requirement that the bachelor’s degree be in engineering and relevant to the applicant’s proposed major, with no more than 25 per cent of subjects failed.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.

EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION

The University of Sydney, located in Sydney, Australia, is a world-renowned institution that is ranked in the top 20 universities in the world (QS World University Rankings, 2024). Students come from all over the globe to study at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Students have the choice of selecting from Australia’s widest range of programmes and disciplines. Offering over 400 study areas to select from, the university has two subjects that are ranked in the top ten in the world, with an additional 30 disciplines ranked amongst the top 50 in the world (QS 2023 Subject Rankings). Career opportunities for students are enhanced through internships and work experience, as well as the option of studying abroad for part of their degree through one of the university’s overseas programmes.
