COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Bachelor of Science Advanced Honours (Biomolecular Physics) degree is for high-achieving students interested in a challenging program leading to a career in scientific research.
This degree requires completion of subjects in physics, mathematics, chemistry, biological science and statistics. Additionally, you will study specialist subjects in molecules, cells and organisms, biochemistry, mechanics and thermodynamics, electromagnetism and optoelectronics, as well as quantum mechanics and nanoscale biology.
An incredibly flexible degree, you can undertake individual research subjects in second, third, and fourth-year levels. You can also participate in various enrichment activities and develop a close association with an appropriate member of one of the faculty’s research teams.
Biomolecular physicists assist in developing molecular diagnostic instrumentation for government and institutional research laboratories, as well as beam-line scientists at National Research Facilities (e.g. ANSTO and the Australian Synchrotron). They work closely with other scientists to develop a better understanding of diseases and improve treatment, diagnostic, and recovery in a range of medical conditions.
Other employment areas include material scientist, academic roles in tertiary education, scientist in the pharmaceutical industry, R&D industry scientist (software and hardware), science teacher, scientist and researcher, patent examiner, management and logistics roles, and data analyst.
Research is supported by UOW’s Molecular Horizons which houses two cryo-electron microscopes: the three-metre tall, one tonne Titan Krios – the world’s most powerful high-resolution electron microscope – and the slightly smaller Talos Arctica.
Many physicists at UOW work under the aegis of the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM). ISEM is recognised as a flagship research strength of UOW. Students will be able to undertake research projects in nanotechnology for medical applications in third- and fourth-year level subjects.

Accreditation & professional recognition: The Bachelor of Science Advanced Honours (Physics) degree conforms to the requirements for membership of the Australian Institute of Physics. Australian Institute of Physics.
