Course summary
The Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Trauma and Recovery Practice will respond to issues that have particular relevance in Indigenous communities in Australia. It will provide specific skills so that graduates can work from a trauma informed approach. It is a multi-disciplinary program where students will apply critical thinking, collaborative practices and judgement when working individually and within communities across service provision with children, families and communities who may have experienced trauma. Most importantly the course will focus on applying Indigenous social, and emotional wellbeing principles, practices and healing frameworks. Utilising Aboriginal and western concepts of trauma, this course focuses on the contributing factors to experiences of trauma, considering historical, cumulative impact of trauma and current day experiences. This course focuses on the impacts of racism and other factors that can have major health implications on Indigenous Australians, including the pathophysiology and clinical aspects of the body response to trauma. Additionally, this course will assist students with the skills to respond to trauma in individuals and communities, while also being able to provide services that are trauma informed.
This course is only available full-time and is a self-paced, fully online course.

The Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Trauma Recovery Practice is a unique program that is designed, developed and delivered by Aboriginal academic and health delivery experts in collaboration with local Aboriginal elders and is designed to respond to issues that have particular relevance in indigenous communities in Australia.
On completion of this 20 weeks course you will be able to:
Work from a trauma-informed practice
Apply critical thinking, collaborate practices and insights to effectively work with trauma-exposed individuals and communities
Apply Indigenous social, and emotional wellbeing principles, practices and healing frameworks
Understand and identify factors that contribute to experiences of trauma
Identify and understand the pathophysiology and clinical aspects of the body’s response to trauma
Respond to and provide services that are trauma-informed
What you will study
The Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Trauma and Recovery Practice requires the successful completion of 24 credit points over 20 weeks and is 100% online. Students can complete the core subject MEDI839 Indigenous Trauma Care and Recovery Practice at their own pace noting that there are some compulsory live online activities where online attendance is required.
