COURSE DESCRIPTION
This qualification reflects the role of workers in a range of community settings and clients’ homes, who provide training and support in a manner that empowers people with disabilities to achieve greater levels of independence, self-reliance, community participation and wellbeing. Workers promote a person-centred approach, work without direct supervision and may be required to supervise and/or coordinate a small team.
To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.
Students who undertake this qualification will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to work in residential group homes,
training resource centres, day respite centres and open employment services, other community settings and client’s homes.
Students learn how to train and support people with disabilities to enhance their ability to achieve greater levels of
independence, self-reliance and community participation. The Certificate IV in Disability is suitable for students who are
working in or intend to work in, the disability sector. Disability includes intellectual, physical, sensory and multiple disorders.
Depending on the electives chosen, this qualification may lead to the positions of:
- Behavioural support officer
- Disability officer – day support
- Employment coordinator (disability)
- Lifestyle support officer
- Marketing coordinator
- Residential care officer
- Social educator
- Development officer
- Disability support officer / worker
- Job coordinator
- Local area coordinator
- Project officer (life enhancement team)
- Senior personal care assistant
- Supervisor
Pathways to Further Studies
Upon successful completion of the Certificate IV in Disability students may enrol in a course at a Diploma level or above.
REQUIREMENTS
Students must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
In accordance with the National Code 2018, Astute Training Pty Ltd places students in the courses most appropriate to their level and goals.
All students are expected to have reached an acceptable level of proficiency in the English language. International students need an IELTS level of 5.5 or higher or have completed an approved English Test listed below.
The IELTS provided must have been taken no more than two years before the time of the application.
From 5 November 2011, the department will accept test results from the following specified English language tests for Student visa purposes taken in any country:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-Based test (TOEFL iBT)
- Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic
- Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) test (also known as Certificate in Advanced English).
