COURSE DESCRIPTION
This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide services to clients in relation to mental health issues. They can provide counselling, referral, advocacy and education/health promotion services. These workers are required to have high level specialist knowledge, skills and competencies especially in regard to laws affecting people with mental health issues, the range of services available to them and health issues related to mental health.
To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 160 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.
Course Outcome:
On successful completion of this course, students would receive Certificate IV in Disability qualification. Graduates of this qualification may seek employment in a range of organizations including community, government and mental health sector agencies where they may be responsible for Engaging with children and adults with psychological disabilities and sourcing solutions, working with clients to self-manage their health and improve their mental well-being and Implementing policies, procedures and guidelines for the provision of mental health services.
Assessment Method:
Assessments may include short written knowledge tests, discussions and oral communication demonstrations, case study exercises, written reports, web-based research and reports, final projects, and final written exams. To perform at your best, you will probably need to work on the assessments outside of class time.
Course Credit
Students may apply for recognition of existing qualifications or skills, knowledge and experience (credit transfer or recognition of prior learning). The granting of course credit may affect course fees, as well as the duration of the course.
Pathways:
Academic Pathways
Students who complete this course may wish to continue their education into the CHC51015 Diploma of Counselling, CHC52015 Diploma of Community Services, Mental Health Practice, etc.
Employment Pathways
Potential employment options are as personal care assistant, Mental health worker, Case Manager, Mental Health Counsellor, Community Rehabilitation and Support Worker, Mental Health Outreach Worker, Alcohol and Other Drugs Worker etc.
REQUIREMENTS
Be at least 18 years of age and have completed the equivalent of Year 12.
Participate in a course entry interview to determine suitability for the course and student needs.
Have an IELTS* score of 6.0 (test results must be no more than 2 years old) English language competence can also be demonstrated through documented evidence of any of the following:
- Educated for 5 years in an English-speaking country; or
- Successful completion of an English Placement Test
