COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Teaching (BSc/BTch) course is for those wanting to teach in Christian, independent and state school systems in both Australia and overseas. Avondale’s BSc/BTch is a highly practical degree that is designed to provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills for a career in secondary science and mathematics teaching.

This course is designed to be specific for teaching areas and electives from within the Science related teaching fields.

At Avondale you are given the opportunity to complete one of your professional teaching experiences in a developing country. In the past this has taken teams of Avondale students to Cambodia, India, Nepal and The Kingdom of Tonga.

If you want to combine your love for Science and Mathematics you can choose from the following Science related teaching areas:

Biology
Chemistry
Food Technology
Mathematics
Mathematics/Physics
Science

You can graduate with the ability to teach in two Science related teaching areas by completing a double major or major and minor selected from the above list.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Teaching, graduates will be able to:

synthesise their personal and professional beliefs into a worldview that enables them to be effective and ethical teachers;
create quality learning experiences for all students;
demonstrate the acquisition of a body of knowledge and skills specific to the creative and professional practice of chosen discipline areas;
use personal competencies to enhance knowledge acquisition, communication, problem solving, creativity and sustainability;
design, implement and evaluate curriculum and assessment for diverse learners;
create sustainable, safe, respectful, socially just, and supportive learning environments;
promote holistic wellbeing practices in personal and professional settings;
address educational issues through research to improve teaching knowledge and practice;
demonstrate and employ a philosophy of service and servant leadership in professional and personal spheres;
reflect critically on professional practice, professional commitment, and ethical and moral responsibilities of the teaching profession.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

BSc/BTch graduates leave with the skills and potential to gain employment as a:

Secondary School Teacher
Secondary Science Teacher
Tutor

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants with higher education study

Completion or partial completion of an Australian Qualifications Framework AQF Level 7 qualification at an accredited university or higher education provider; or
Successful completion of bridging or enabling course, or another recognised tertiary preparation course; or
Successful completion of an Avondale pathway program

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study

An Australian Qualifications Framework AQF Level 4 qualification or higher; or
A New Zealand Qualifications Framework NZQF Level 4 qualification or higher

Applicants with work and life experience

An ATAR equal to or above 63.00; or
An appropriate score in the uniTEST and the Tertiary Online Written Assessment; or
An appropriate score in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic): 7.5 across all four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing, (with no score below 7.0 in any of the four skill areas and a score of no less than 8.0 in speaking and listening)
