COURSE DESCRIPTION

Take a pathway that allows high-achieving students to complete a program of study in mechanical and biomedical engineering in only five years. You will study a variety of areas including dynamics, engineering design, biomechanics and biomedical instrumentation. The final year includes studies in advanced mechanical design and innovations in medical devices, allows for further elective topics to be chosen, and includes a masters thesis.

What you will study

First year

A typical first year may include:

  • core topics in electronics, professional skills, engineering design, engineering programming, engineering physics and materials, engineering mechanics, and mathematics.

Second year

A typical second year may include:

  • core topics in engineering mathematics, analysis of engineering systems, mechanics and structures, fluid mechanics, dynamics, engineering materials, and thermodynamics and energy systems
  • a mechanical practice certificate workshop
  • a mechanical design project.

Third year

A typical third year may include:

  • core topics in mechanics of machines, project management for engineering and science, control systems, solid mechanics, applied thermo-fluid dynamics, and workplace preparation
  • a 20-week industry placement program.

Honours year

A typical honours year may include:

  • a major mechanical engineering honours thesis allowing high-performing students to progress to a higher degree by research
  • topics in advanced mechanical design, and standards, ethics and compliance
  • a selection of electives in allied science and engineering areas.

Your career

Graduates may work in many areas in the mining, defence, manufacturing, shipbuilding, environmental, engineering consulting, building services, automotive, and petrochemical industries or in the design and production of diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment in hospitals, devices to assist in home-based health care and rehabilitation, and sensory and control systems.

Potential occupations include:

  • biomedical engineer
  • clinical support specialist consultant
  • customer support engineer
  • pathology field service engineer
  • instrumentation engineer.

Potential employers include:

  • hospital trusts
  • medical equipment manufacturers
  • university research departments
  • other research units and rehabilitation or health charities.
