Get equipped with the essential skills to provide high quality, safe and effective woman-centred care. With a focus on the principles of primary health care and continuity of care, you will develop an understanding of various midwifery models to enable you to apply theory and skills in your daily practice.
What you will study
First year
A typical first year may include:
- core topics in contexts of midwifery practice, foundational professional skills, perinatal mental health, anatomy and physiology of reproduction, and Indigenous health for midwives
- clinical placement topics in introduction to midwifery practice, and maternal and infant assessment skills.
Second year
A typical second year may include:
- core topics in maternal and infant nutrition, evidence for midwifery practice, clinical pharmacology and clinical sciences, and applied pharmacology for midwives
- clinical placement topics in midwifery skills and midwifery care for the woman with complex needs.
Third year
A typical third year may include:
- core topics in working in communities, midwifery care for the woman with complex needs, and professional midwifery practice
- clinical placement topics in midwifery care for the neonate with complex needs, women’s health for midwives, and a midwifery practicum.
Your career
A range of programs with limited places may be available in public and private hospitals to assist graduate registered midwives in their first year of practice, with clinical rotations, preceptorship, and educational support throughout their progression.
Your degree is the first step towards a range of employment opportunities including registered midwife positions in settings such as:
- midwifery group practice
- antenatal education
- community health
- private practice.
Potential employers include:

- medical practices
REQUIREMENTS
Flinders University recognises international secondary schooling for direct entry to undergraduate programs.
