Through JCU’s Graduate Certificate of Aeromedical Retrieval, you will gain specific skills in pre-hospital and secondary retrieval situations in accordance with Australian and International healthcare standards. As you study the foundations of and essential skills in aeromedical retrieval, you will learn how to manage patient transportation in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters in both domestic and international contexts. You will apply your knowledge by solving real-world problems and engaging in simulation-based scenarios developed by highly professional and well-regarded clinical aeromedical retrieval specialists.
You will examine models of aeromedical care, aircraft characteristics and flight-specific problems, aircraft flight and safety, medical equipment and clinical care in the aeromedical environment. You will also study the legislation, insurance and special issues associated with aeromedical retrieval in both domestic and international contexts.
You will have the opportunity to participate in a three-day in-person block mode subject delivered in Townsville that involves learning from clinical experts from various aeromedical retrieval services throughout Australia. You’ll get to participate in field trips to examine operational rotary wing, fixed-wing and military aeromedical retrieval assets up close, giving you insight into working with such vehicles.
As a specialist in aeromedical retrieval, you will be equipped to provide medical and health services within multiple environments and contexts. Your skills in patient management will apply to treatment and care pre-hospital, bedside in the referring hospital, in-flight and during the handover process at the end of a mission.
The subjects that you study within your aeromedical retrieval degree will give you knowledge in pre-hospital retrieval medicine and interfacility critical care retrievals through the life span from neonatal, paediatric adults to geriatrics. The breadth of medical studies available in JCU’s Graduate Certificate of Aeromedical Retrieval will prepare you to provide medical services in any emergency situation.
