COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Master of Architecture combined with the Master of Urban Design creates professionals who can design buildings, public and private spaces with an understanding of the city within the context of social, environmental and economic concerns.

The program aims to provide you with:

a sustainable outlook with the ability to use new materials and technologies to create environmentally sustainable buildings;
the ability to draw on studies within urban design to develop knowledge for the design of interconnected infrastructure for our towns and cities;
a grounding in architectural history and theory and technology that leads to the creation of innovative architecture.

You will undertake a sequence of intensive design studios culminating in a research thesis. In the studios, students cover architectural design in the context of the creative invention of architectural futures, integrating aesthetic, technological, programmatic, environmental and social issues in the production of buildings and spaces.

By combining the Master of Architecture and Master of Urban Design as a double degree, our students complete two professionally accredited graduate programs in a reduced timeframe. This gives them a true competitive advantage and broader career options. Dual accreditation also offers a distinctive signal to employers and industry and enhances our existing graduate reputation for strong leadership and strategic thinking skills, embedded in our expertise in providing a world-class built environment education influencing Melbourne and cities globally for over 150 years.

Career outcomes

Upon graduation your skills you can be applied in a range of design roles both architectural and urban or planning in nature. A dual qualification means you can choose to work as an architect or urban designer in private firms or government departments, or set up your own practice working on residential, commercial and institutional projects.

Urban design skills are in great demand throughout Australia and the Asia-Pacific region and your architectural qualification combined with a comprehensive knowledge of design for urban spaces will provide the opportunity to work locally and globally.

You may also move into related careers such as industrial design, furniture design, interior design, landscape design, urban planning, facility management, project management and development, and conservation and heritage management.
