COURSE DESCRIPTION

Combine an economic understanding of money and banking, with a practical knowledge of how financial markets operate, at both a local and global level. You’ll develop your quantitative data analytic skills with the software and technology available in our world-class Rosemarie Nathanson Financial Markets Trading Room and engage in an internship with a private or public organisation.

The Financial Economics Extended Major is unique to WA and sits within our Bachelor of Economics degree. You’ll learn core microeconomic and macroeconomic principles, as well as develop an understanding of the important role that money and banking play in an economy. This major covers economics, banking in theory and practice, international finance, and how money, banking and financial markets operate.

Throughout the major, you’ll gain quantitative data analytic skills using our world-class Trading Room. Through developing skills using software and technology found in large modern financial institutions, you’ll be highly valued by employers upon graduation. You’ll also have the opportunity to undertake an internship with a private or public organisation, or through an industry-based project unit.

demonstrate an awareness of, and sensitivity to a variety of social and economic perspectives.

apply your theoretical learning to industry-related projects, either through an internship with an organisation, or through an industry-based project in your final year of study.

Career Pathways

This Extended Major is designed for students who seek to become professional economists and pursue careers as economic consultants, economic and financial analysts, and specialist economists in government, business, banking and other financial institutions. UWA Economics graduates have built careers in the Australian and State Treasuries, the Australian Reserve Bank, as well as in economic consultancies, major companies, banks and large financial institutions.

REQUIREMENTS

Entry requirements may vary from country to country. Students are required to complete an international academic qualification equivalent to Australian High School (or equivalent).

English language requirements:

IELTS (academic): Overall minimum score of 6.5, no band lower than 6.0

TOEFL Internet-based TOEFL (iBT): an overall score of 82 or above with a minimum score of 22 in writing, 18 in reading, 20 in speaking and 20 in listening

Pearsons Test of English (PTE) (academic): An overall score of 64 with a minimum score of 59 in the speaking and writing sections, and no less than 54 in the other sections
