COURSE DESCRIPTION
Our Mining Engineering major involves you being taught by internationally recognised experts who are across the very latest ideas and new technologies. Through class activities and mine site visits, you’ll get exposure to industry practises and form networks for your future career.
You’ll get the opportunity to work on practical projects, either individually or in a team. You’ll build the technical skills, mining science knowledge, industry connections and hands-on experience to excel in the global resources sector, and to lead the technological transformation and development of the industry.
You’ll gain detailed knowledge of surface mining, underground mining, rock mechanics and mine design with exposure to geology, data science, Python coding, finance, and management.
You’ll get the opportunity to take on a final year research project giving you extensive hands-on experience and the chance to develop and test new ideas. You’ll acquire the skills needed to analyse and design the most suitable mining method for a project, the best people and equipment to use, and the most appropriate applications of the latest technologies.
You’ll graduate as a skilled engineer with a breadth of experience in the analysis, design and optimisation of complete mining operations (systems), from extraction of the ore to delivery of the final product.
You’ll learn to
Select the most appropriate mining techniques for any operation, considering technical applicability, costs and safety
Identify which mining equipment is appropriate for a specific location, and accurately design its operation, productivity, and operating costs
Assess internal and external risks and constraints in mine site operation
Utilise advanced technical mining engineering skills in problem identification, simplification, analysis, planning, design, implementation and operation for an exciting career in engineering
Develop a deep practical understanding of the core concepts of mining engineering and extend this knowledge to more specialised areas such as deposit evaluation, mine design, mine production, and environmental management
Work effectively in a team, bringing leadership and accountability to successfully solve real-world problems
Why study Mining Engineering?
You’ll be studying in Perth WA, probably the world’s leading centre for mining engineering. This allows you to make valuable connections with UWA’s industry partners including BHP, Rio Tinto, FMG and many other members of the mining industry – giving your career a head start.
You’ll be taught, not just by academics, but also by industry lecturers who are world leading experts in their field, giving you an all-round knowledge base and placing you in high regard anywhere in the world.
You’ll be studying alongside students from a range of different backgrounds and engineering specialisations, sharing ideas and gaining an understanding of how to work in successful cross-functional teams.
UWA is ranked 4th in the world and 1st in Australia for Mining and Mineral Engineering (ARWU 2022), so you’ll be learning and working alongside leaders making a real impact.
