COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course enables students to communicate and to become proficient in one language (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Indonesian, Japanese or Spanish) and culture. This gives graduates a competitive advantage in a variety of workplaces, whether in Australia or overseas. It is available as a stand-alone award or for students who are concurrently enrolled in a Bachelor course through UNE. There is also a pathway for existing teachers to use the Diploma to add a language as an additional teaching area. Students enrolling in the course in trimester 2 will be unable to commence study in the language at beginner level.

Course Aims

This course enables students to become proficient in one language other than English and to demonstrate a depth of knowledge in one culture (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Indonesian, Japanese or Spanish). This gives graduates a competitive advantage in a variety of workplaces, whether in Australia or overseas. It is available as a stand-alone award for students who are currently enrolled in a Bachelor course through UNE.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate proficiently and effectively oral/aural and writing/reading skills in a language discipline not including English;
  • analyse, comment upon and appropriately interpret a variety of target language usages of varying degrees of complexity;
  • research, plan, design and deliver written and oral presentations in a variety of contexts; and
  • demonstrate some depth of knowledge of specific inter-cultural and cross-cultural issues, practices and ethical values.

REQUIREMENTS

For direct admission into undergraduate courses offered by UNE you must have completed an educational qualification considered to be at least equivalent to completion of Year 12 in Australia. Entry requirements vary from country to country

Students hold an AQF Level 7 four year pre-service teaching qualification of a recognised Australian University or tertiary institution (or overseas equivalent as assessed by Australian Education International – National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (AEI-NOOSR)); or

Students hold an AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree and an AQF Level 8 or Level 9 one or two year pre-service teaching qualification of a recognised Australian University (or overseas equivalent as assessed by Australian Education International – National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (AEI-NOOSR)).

An IELTS (Academic) overall score of at least 6.0 with no sub-band less than 5.5; or equivalent TOEFL score of at least 213 in the computer-based test; or at least 79 in the internet-based test with no less than 22 in the written component; or a PTE Academic minimum overall score of 57 with no skill less than 50.

The university is located on several sites in Armidale, NSW. Research is offered in the areas of rural science, agricultural economics, geology, educational administration, linguistics, archaeology, etc.
