The Graduate Certificate in Finance is an 6 month full-time or part-time equivalent course offered by the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics. The course is full fee-paying, which means that you will be charged at the full fee-paying rate listed for each unit.
This course provides training in finance for those who do not have any background in the discipline. Successful completion of this course will give students a solid foundation in the fundamentals of finance, and can be built on through further studies to achieve a masters level qualification and build a career in the finance industry.
Course objectives
The UTas GCFin is grounded in a philosophy based on two major premises: to facilitate the acquisition of life-long financial knowledge and skills through sharing and building on the diverse experiences of all stakeholders within the course and to foster empowerment and personal responsibility by encouraging students to challenge the conventional paradigms in finance.
Our GCFin will engage students using teaching materials that link the lectures and workshops to local, national and global case studies. This approach will facilitate self-actualisation and the notion ‘doing and thinking are one’; it will also equip our students with the theories, concepts, and knowledge in finance that are necessary to deal with the rapid changes in finance worldwide by covering a variety of perspectives, including, but not restricted to, the theoretical, empirical, behavioural, ethical, economic, environmental and statistical/mathematical.
In doing so, our GCFin will instil in students financial knowledge and skills that they can utilize throughout their future professional careers in the broader finance community both at the personal and institutional level including; financial planners, financial institutions, insurance companies, superannuation funds, not-for-profit organisations, government and local authorities as well as individuals
Learning Outcomes
1 Explain the context and integrate specialised theoretical and technical finance knowledge to solve complex financial issues in private corporations and federal public organisations.
2 Exercise judgement to design financial solutions using ethical, social, regulatory, economic, sustainability and global perspectives.
REQUIREMENTS
International applicants must provide one of the following:
Successful completion of English for Academic Purposes 2 at the University of Tasmania with a minimum overall score of 65% (no individual score less than 60%);
An IELTS score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0);
A TOEFL (iBT) overall score of 88 (no individual skill below: Reading 16; Listening 16; Speaking 18; Writing 22);
A PTE Academic 58 with no score lower than 50
EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION
The University of Tasmania was officially founded on 1st January 1890 and is located at Sandy Bay, Tasmania. In addition to the main campus at Sandy Bay, it also operates out of the Newnham Campus and the Cradle Coast Campus. The most popular courses offered are the environmental studies that include wilderness management, marine sciences and indigenous studies in Tasmanian literature. Other unconventional courses include agriculture development, studies on the community and population and ocean study programs. The university also comprises of a Music Conservatorium, Art school and a School of Clinical studies.
