Students who reach a certain academic level can apply for King’s Own Institute International Student Scholarships (KISS), which rewards those who are doing brilliant things.

For many students, this will be the first time they leave home and live overseas independently. KOI’s staff are available to assist with information regarding living in Sydney before arrival. The Learning Skills Centre (LSC) at KOI is designed to help students in developing essential academic skills in literacy, numeracy, and IT.

Anyone who dreams of studying in the vibrant city of Sydney and wants to set themselves up for a great career in business, IT or accounting, will enjoy life at KOI. The courses here are accredited and recognised across the world, giving students plenty of international opportunities after they graduate.

Students benefit from small class sizes and access to internationally respected teaching staff. This allows them to ask plenty of questions and make the most of their learning experience. Free English language tuition is available for international students as well, helping them prepare for a career in an English-speaking country.

KOI’s three state-of-the-art Sydney campuses are located in the lively Central Business District. Its Newcastle centre is one of just two places in the city that offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

KOI has an academic board, made up of respected academics and higher education teachers, which makes sure every course meets its high standards. It also has international connections with universities and colleges across the world. There is also an experienced team of teaching staff, who help students during their studies. All have different backgrounds, but come from impressive positions in universities, the military or international businesses.

KOI takes part in the Student Experience Survey (SES). The SES is a national survey that’s being carried out for the Australian Government Department of Education and Training. Feedback is very important. It helps us continue improving the quality of teaching, learning and student experience for current and future students.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for KOI vary depending on the course, but the university makes it easy for applicants to find out exactly what they’ll need for admission. There is a specific international student application form, which needs to be filled out and emailed or posted to KOI.

English Score Required

The minimum English requirements for direct entry into all of KOI’s courses on offer, including TESOL, are available below:

IELTS: minimum score of 6.0 with no band less than 5.5
TOEFL: minimum score of 60 with no band less than
Listening 11, speaking 17, reading 12, writing 20.
PTE – minimum score of 50 with no band less than 42.
CAE – minimum overall score of 169 with no band less than 162.
HKCEE – minimum C in syllabus B
HKALE – minimum D use of English in AS-Level
GCE Level – C grade or better in GCE O-Level English
NSW HSC – minimum 55 per cent in English as a second language
Other: successful completion of Certificate IV or higher for a duration of 12 months or over

Free additional English coaching and assessments are offered to help international students with their English language skills. There’s information for those applying from abroad, and for those who are already studying in Australia. Each course has different academic requirements. No matter which one students are applying for, they’ll need documents such as:

A KOI international student application form
Proof they meet the minimum English requirements
A copy of their passport
Copies of academic documents
Documents showing any changes of names
A Visa Grant letter (for those who are already in Australia)

The fees students need to pay will depend on the course they choose and are different for international students. Every international student also needs to have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), which can be arranged through KOI.

Scholarships & funding

KOI offers scholarships to students who qualify through their academic performance. King’s Own Institute International Student Scholarships (KISS) are given to undergraduate and postgraduate international students who are doing excellent work. The value of this scholarship is up to AUD 500 per trimester.

University structure

KOI has three locations across Sydney, which are all in the busy city centre between The Rocks and Darling Harbour. It has another campus in Newcastle, New South Wales, which is around two hours’ drive away. KOI also operates a virtual campus system, which allows many of its classes to be delivered online for students who can’t travel to every session.

KOI has a slightly different trimester structure, with three terms per academic year instead of two. If students choose not to take breaks, they can complete a three-year bachelor’s degree in two years. Many of the courses also include professional accreditations, which allow students to join chartered organisations in their fields. KOI’s staff will help each student settle in and access important information about life in Australia.

As soon as they accept the offer to study at KOI, students will be sent a pre-departure guide. This has information about orientation and enrolment. During orientation, all new students will be given more information about the school, staff, services, and assistance they can access.

Accommodation

International students must stick to the financial rules set by the Department of Home Affairs. When thinking about their budget, it’s sensible to consider things like:

Accommodation
Utilities and communication such as electricity and gas bills, mobile phones and internet bills
Food and groceries
Travel and transport
Entertainment and socialising
Study materials and stationery

This guide to living costs in Australia gives students a rough idea of how much they might need to budget.

While KOI doesn’t offer on-site accommodation, there are lots of options nearby. This programme helps students no matter which course they’re studying. The Academic Integrity Module (AIM) is managed by LSC. All students must complete the programme at the start of their first trimester.

Graduate outcomes

Students who achieve a GPA of 3.5 or above in more than half of their modules can access exciting opportunities. The AIPP’s Professional Internship programme is one example, which lets students gain real-world world experience that will help them stand out in the competitive graduate market.

Students also get individual interview training and a resumé-polishing service to give them the best start to their career.
