COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Master of Engineering Science (Electrical and Electronic) equips you with the skills and knowledge to plan, design and build the electrical and electronic circuitry that is integral to so many high technology applications. You also have the opportunity to focus on niche areas including renewable technologies such as wind farms, and electrical drive systems such as those used on ships and submarines and in emission-free vehicles.
Electrical engineering is concerned with large scale electrical systems such as power supply, renewable power generation and motors while electronic engineering is typically concerned with small scale, often lower voltage electronic systems such as computer systems, communication networks and integrated circuits. This degree adds to your previous study and covers both types of engineering.
Electrical and electronic engineers are involved in developing technology used in areas such as aircraft systems, media and sound broadcasting, power distribution systems, traffic and urban management, medical equipment, robotics, broadband systems, and scientific devices.
What you will study
You will be provided with study in both the theoretical and practical aspects of engineering, and the course builds on your previous experience and knowledge.
Topics cover areas such as physics, materials, mechanics, mathematics, project management and innovation, and a masters research project.
In addition, the Master of Engineering Science (Electrical and Electronic) may include topics in:
- programming
- microprocessors
- analysis of engineering systems
- sensors and actuators
- automation and industrial control
- computer networks and operating systems
- autonomous systems
- advanced electronic design
- robotic systems
- signal processing.
Your career
High demand exists for qualified professional electrical and electronic engineers in areas such as defence, medicine, telecommunications, building, manufacturing and mining.
REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must normally hold one of the following appropriate qualifications:
- An engineering degree
- A science degree
- A computer science degree
- An Australian TAFE diploma or advanced diploma (AQF Level 5) qualification in an appropriate field plus seven years relevant work experience
- An equivalent overseas qualification.
In addition, students are expected to be able to demonstrate previous study or recognised prior learning in communication and planning skills, mathematics (equivalent to first year university mathematics), and science (equivalent to university undergraduate topics in chemistry and physics). Some basic knowledge of other relevant sciences and previous study in programming and computing fundamentals is assumed.
